I'm smart and articulate but easy to get along with and have friends of every stripe and type. I'm a retired professor from the U. of Pittsburgh but am still active in my field. I do a lot of writing, from professional work to romantic poetry. I'm currently working on a sort of memoir about my three years as an artillery officer in the U.S. Marine Corps 50 years ago. I'm a Notre Dame graduate and fan of Notre Dame football, Steelers football, too. I studied abroad in Belgium (U. of Louvain) but took my PhD degree at Princeton. I have lots of friends in the many countries in which I've traveled and lectured. I live in my 'city house' in Slippery Rock, but spend a lot of time at the 'vacation cottage' on my 70-acre horse farm in Mercer County (21 miles distant), where I work with my four horses, make hay, brushhog the fields, mow lots of grass, plow lots of snow, etc. Although an intellectual, I'm anything but a couch potato (though I do watch more TV than I care to admit, especially during football season). I'm an artist/writer and an inveterate thinker. I like the subtle pleasures of life: the old-guy profile a mound of melting snow makes, the thrill of a well-placed adjective, the ghostly cuteness of the half-obliterated teddy-bear-with-a-balloon sticker someone had pasted onto my computer at work.
I also like Pittsburgh, the city I live near. I like its distinctive look--part turn-of-the-century, part funky. Just look at the unassuming houses, the blocky skyscrapers, the ornate bridges, and the colorful, detailed murals (such as that one downtown depicting a Fifties-futuristic commute). No blandness, just dignified grandness.
And I like Pittsburghers--the friendly, unpretentious people who don't mind giving detailed directions when you get lost; who value personal interaction; who have their own charming quirks. (Who else uses chairs to reserve curbside parking spaces?) And I like the emphasis on learning and creativity , as epitomized in the thriving university culture and the thriving art scene.
And speaking of art, I like Pittsburgh's art museums and galleries, particularly The Andy Warhol Museum. I appreciate the handmade industrialness of Warhol's work, as in his early Pop-Art paintings, in which news photos and pop-cultural icons exude Warhol's awe-struckness, even though he used assistants. I appreciate the personal touch in art, for I'm an artist myself. I strive to fill my work with personality. I tend to draw and paint realistic, surrealistic, abstract, and semi-abstract scenes of people, creatures, and shapes gleefully interacting. I want to avoid staidness; I want to shake up the visual realm. And by the way, I like many styles of art other than Pop. Art Nouveau, for instance--the lush detail and colors and the sensual women bespeak of actual, diligent creative effort.
