| It is because the harm caused by meat-eating, pollutants, and viruses is spreading rapidly around the world. This is particularly striking in developed countries, but there are also the past cases of mad cow disease, livestock stressed and fertilized in contaminated pig and poultry farms, fish polluted in the ocean and farmed fish given drugs, and more recently, bird flu, foot-and-mouth disease in swine, dioxin-contaminated meat and dairy products, additives, artificial sweeteners, and environmental hormone problems seen in vegetables, fruits, grains, genetically modified foods, and changes in the biological system caused by artificially produced chemicals not previously found in nature. Our food and dietary habits seem to be threatened on many levels. There are also ethical issues such as compassion for all living things, herbivore theory, and related issues such as human tooth shape, intestinal length, personality, and character, as well as many other medical, scientific, and historical bases. |
