Why I'm Vegetarian
I am a lifelong vegetarian, being a strict Hindu. That said, it is not as if I am not aware of the other ethical traditrions or environmental impact factors that lead others to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle, and I'm eager to talk about the subject with others to hear your journeys. In many ways, mine was simple, as I've never eaten meat. Your stories are braver. I'd love to tell them
More About Me
My background: I'm South Indian and Tamil is my mother tongue. Although English is considered my "first language" as I was born and raised in California, I still dream half the time in Tamil, as my late father features prominently in my dreams, and both he and my mother spoke to me growing up in a mix. (They both spoke English only at work, but wanted us to have our roors, so when we went back to Madras -- now Chennai -- periodically, we'd be able to communicate). As a result, I'm still pretty decent at Tamil, though my second cousins tease me mercilessly every time we go back, because I speak "like an old person" and don't ever know any current slang or references, while they (due to cultural hegemony) know all American slang, and frankly, sometimes more pop culture references... I went to Berkeley, where I majored in Cognitive Science (Neuroscience emphasis) and South & Southeast Asian Studies (Languages -- Sanskrit/Tamil & Literature emphasis). Then I taught music in elementary schols in Oakland (I am not exaggerating when I say that I am an excellent [A- on my best days, I'm not Paul McCartney] singer and have been hired several times to sing in public; so you know I'm accurate when I say, I'm a mediocre [C-] guitarist at best, and a fairly poor [D] pianist). I love board games, but seldom get to play now that I moved back to the Bay Area in 2019 following my divorce (elephant in the room!) after a lengthy relationship of 14 years. While I lived on the East Coast, though, I did love getting together groups for dinner parties, often with party games, but sometimes with serious strategic board games. In case you can't tell, I'm a colossal NERD -- but in almost all dimensions: film (I love playing the "Top Ten today" game because it's different every time you ask a film buff!), music (I appreciate most types of music and am always opren to listening to new artists), poetry, literature (I read constantly and inveterately -- I am not lying when I say that I read around 200 books a year -- I'm an insomniac, so... Kindle with no backlight is my best friend!), art (my dream date is a trip around a museum with the audiotours on, looking at wonderful works of art, followed by a rousing discussing of those works over a wonderful meal!), Comix (and Comics), gastronomy (this basically means I like to eat, doesnt it?), and genres: Sci Fi, Fantasy, Mystery, and I'm starting to get a bit into Romance, even, just not Horror/Thriller (yet...?).
I'm Looking For
People who are committed to lifelong vegetarianism (not "Ive been a veetarisan for almost five months!" or "I was a vegan for ten years, but then I miussed steak!" (You know whjo you are -- don't contact me except for casual board game meetups in my local area). I'm eager to talk about the subject with others to hear your journeys. In many ways, mine was a simple one, as I've never eaten meat. Your stories are braver. I'd love to hear them! Also, yes, if you are a Sci Fi/Fantasy/Mystery/MythologyBoard Game Geek, yeah, contact me, by all means, even if you don't live nearby -- we could also game online, or talk about common interests by Zoom/Hangouts/etc. I recently got together with a college friend as she wanted to watch a movie, and I suggested we use "Watch2Gether" which actually worked awesomely! But I'm not here looking for a date, either -- that's the most alienating thing about coming back to the Bay Area after ~17 years -- I no longer know any vegetaerians here! (All my vegetarian friends have moved away).
