Why I'm Vegetarian
I was "normal" enough through my teenage years, but with a growing abhorrence of the more-or-less hidden requirements of being part of a meat-producing culture. Finally, at about 21 I found that I simply could no longer ignore the horrors involved, and I became a veggie. At the time, it seemed more a matter of rational argument than of simple disgust, but I now see very clearly that disgust was the primary factor in my case. Indeed, I'm no longer confident that the philosophical arguments for vegetarianism are as strong as I once believed, but my sympathies for the victims of seemingly unnecessary killing of creatures will never change.
More About Me
I was an independent secondary school teacher, and though I greatly enjoyed what I did (engaging youthful minds), that's not the whole of who I am. My primary passion is simply thinking about stuff, all manner of stuff, from the prosaic (why is that first potato chip so much better than all the others?) to the philosophical (what is this incredibly curious thing we call consciousness?). I'm drawn to the scientific outlook (evolutionary psychology is a current interest, as is artificial intelligense), and how things work fascinate me. Still, I've discovered a real need to feel deeply, even viscerally, about things, things that I don't often understand: some sculpture (...but long to touch it!), some architecture, some music evokes such feelings, for example, and films that move me are definitely preferable to comedies (though "Seinfield" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" ought not be missed!) Physical activity (sports, working outdoors, handyman stuff, and so on) is also critical to my sense of well-being...and if I may say, friends find me both funny and interesting....
I'm Looking For
The person I seek need not share my particular curiosities, of course, but it'd be nice if some resonated with her. Feeling deeply about things that really matter is more important to me, however. Other sought qualities: kindness, tolerance, forgiveness, the ability to be mistaken, a good and happy heart...and, alas (because it seems that one doesn't choose one's responses in this regard), initial physical appeal matters a lot, which, for me, means, among other things, trim to muscular, athletic, with a wholesome, fresh, simple look. Difficult to describe, perhaps, but I'll know her when I see her.
