Why I'm Vegan
The short answer is my daughter bent me to her will more than a dozen years ago. The long answer is I don't like bullies and believe the strong shouldn't be able to take advantage of the weak. That extends to all aspects of who I am. I'm not always successful at this, so maybe you can let me know when I miss casein - why is it even in that bean dip - on an ingredient list. Being vegan isn't a diet. It's a stance on how to live one's life, and I try to make decisions based on the premise that my actions should reduce the suffering in the world. A vegan diet does this as well as benefit the environment. My doctor had to call me personally to congratulate me on my most recent bloodwork too. Plus I like food, and most people who eat animal-derived foods tend to have limited their culinary choices. Curry or Thai food anyone?
More About Me
Did you know you don’t tip the bartenders in Scotland? I found that out from a Scotsman I was discussing the “Free Scotland” movement with over a pint a couple of years ago when I went to look for Nessie. I hope you like men who wear kilts; not all the time, mind you. A good Renaissance Faire, fairy festival, or Celtic music festival are perfect excuses to wear one and sit in the cool grass on a late Summer evening listening bands with bagpipes and a fiddle. A didgeridoo is good too. This past New Year’s Eve I was ten miles from the nearest other person hiking in the Allegheny National Forest. I can go it alone, but come along with me this year and share my hot chocolate. My friends - I’m more of a two or three good friends kind of person rather than a large group of acquaintances - are often with me in the woods. We hike, stare at bugs, and avoid being attacked by nesting geese. This past autumn a close friend of mine, her husband, and daughter moved into the other half of the duplex I own. We had fires in my fire pit every Friday through November. Then the weather finally forced us indoors to play games or watch the latest Marvel superhero movie. Do you love the smell of old books in a used bookstore? How do you feel about wandering the Carnegie Museums in Pittsburgh? Dinosaurs or art? We can go in the short line because I’m a member. I hate lines. When I hit an event like a haunted attraction around Halloween I always buy the pass that lets me skip the line. Did I mention I ran a haunted house for kids in the neighborhood while my own were growing up? I still have a basement full of homemade giant spiders, air powered coffins, and full-size plastic skeletons. And rubber rats. Lots of rubber rats. I’ve two kids both in their mid-20s. My daughter is mostly on her own working for various National Parks out west; she actually convinced her boss to let her wear vegan boots. My son lives with me and is still finding his way. He watches the cats when I go travelling. When I’m not sitting at home reading a book with a cat on my lap or doing any of the above, I’m working at a major telecommunications company. It’s not as glamorous as it sounds. I fix broken things that cost a lot of money. They let me wear cool sunglasses while doing it to keep lasers from burning out my eyes.
I'm Looking For
I've taken a few years to be single after my divorce in order to figure out who I am. Finally, I'm ready to find a grownup who wants grownup things like loyalty, honesty, and a deep connection to spend the back half of my life with. Do see yourself doing most of the things I mentioned above? I'm looking forward to learning and doing new things with someone too. Worst case scenario, if we meet for over-priced coffee somewhere, we'll probably end up as great friends. Best case? Let's have some fun and see what happens.
