Why I'm Vegan
I grew up on a small family farm. I bottle fed an orphaned baby calf... at the age of 12, I was eating a hamburger, when I was told who that hamburger was made from... I was disgusted. It was then that I began thinking about why we eat animals. A few months later I saw a 20/20 special with footage of chickens in a factory farm. I became vegetarian at the age of 13. I learned more about animal farming and the devastation it caused to both the animals and our planet. I knew that eggs and dairy were just as cruel, but I didn't want to know, and tried to forget and ignore any thoughts or feelings that surfaced. I lived for many years in a state of cognative dissonance... it was unsettling, and yet I loved, and was addicted to, cheese. In 2009 I watched Earthlings and read Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals. I went through a personal crisis, and needed a change... to be true to myself and live in a way that my mind could be at peace. I went vegan in July 2009. Previously a junk food vegan... but, after watching Forks Over Knives, I began striving to eliminate processed foods. I joined Clean Food Dirty Girl and began batch cooking whole food plant-based oil-free sugar-free meals. (That's a mouthful! Haha.) I've never felt so healthy and incredible, and yet I've returned to eating some processed foods, oil, and sugar these days... but thinking that soon is the time to return to a completely oil-free and sugar-free diet... I know it is best for my health.
More About Me
I love my coffee black with a shot of espresso, hiking, waterfalls, the crackle of a campfire, stargazing, fuzzy sweaters, kisses from my vegan dogs, photography, art, Moscow mules, spades and Texas Holdem. . . if you can get a card game together send me a message right now! I typically spend my free time in hiking and recently I started foraging for mushrooms. I don't mind spending some time in the kitchen… but it’s more fun cooking with a friend! I love trying out new recipes, but a few favorites include: hoisin-mustard tofu lettuce wraps, tofu bahn mi, sweet potato and black bean enchiladas, zucchini malai kofta, roasted Brussels sprouts, and I make a mean tofu scramble. My current obsession is Indian food. I don't love doing the dishes. :p Recently I've discovered the joy of living minimalisticly. I've learned that letting go of things that no longer serve me leads to serenity. I'm a small business owner and I LOVE my profession. It makes me INCREDIBLY HAPPY... but sometimes (mostly seasonally) I work insanely long hours, and I need someone who is understanding of this. I don't see myself relocating my business. Life is good. :) I have small close group of lifelong friends that are my chosen family. Several of them are vegan who also love to cook, so our gatherings always include lots of vegan food. Together we often enjoy board games, card games, escape rooms, bocce, and campfires. A few of years ago I met a small group of compassionate people through a mindfulness based meditation group. Together we started a small community giving-garden. It's a project that is close to my heart, and I donate time there at least once a week sometimes more. I love getting my hands in the dirt, learning about gardening, and donating the fruits of our labor to feed the hungry.
I'm Looking For
Ultimately, a vegan life partner. First and foremost he is vegan, or at least aspiring to be. If he isn't already completely vegan, we can make some delicious vegan food together and the transition would be easy ;) Almost equally as important, he would describe himself as generally a happy, centered, life-loving, positive person. He is motivated, energetic, passionate, hard-working, and doing work that he enjoys. He understands the importance of self-care and self-love, and continues to work on himself. He is honest and open, with excellent communication skills, and is able to talk about emotions. If he also loves to hike and garden, that would be amazing! He needs to live close enough that we can date... if not, he would need to have the time and resources to travel... and ultimately be willing to relocate. He needs to read all this and send me a message. ;)
