I live in London in an international vegan houseshare in Hackney.
I was married in my twenties for five years, no children, and we eventually separated because, as our counsellor said, "you both want such different things." I then moved to Europe and travelled a lot for years, changing career from software engineer in multinationals to vegan writer and promoter working in various organisations and through my own vegan publishing company. I returned to London as it's the best place to be vegan and it's so multicultural, I feel really at home here, especially around Hackney and Shoreditch and in the centre. My housemates are French, Italian and Finnish, and by sharing the house I keep my overheads very low which makes it easy to travel and not have to spend half my income on accommodation.
Things I like to do: travel (been to many countries around the world),
watching movies, and cult tv like Star Trek or Criminal Minds,
lying in parks with a book or going to cafes,
sandy beaches,
massage (I took some classes),
making or going to dinners,
meditation (TM, raja yoga, zen),
yoga, pilates,
martial arts (mainly karate),
chess (I play in the London League),
learning languages (I'm bilingual in French, good in Italian and Russian, can get by in Spanish and Portuguese, and have enough of a few others to get around in those countries),
Oriental religions and philosophy,
psychology and personal growth,
modern and ancient history,
natural history,
all kinds of music except rap.
I changed career from programming to doing something I believe in to make the world a better place. My work is getting busier and busier because of the vegan explosion in London, which is fabulous.
But sometimes it's nice to just "do nothing", relax in the park or with a book or kindle, go to Paris for a few days, and I would love to "do nothing" with someone else.

Being a vegan has not been easy for me, and that's a dramatic understatement. My family was not accepting or understanding when I decided to adopt a vegan diet, and it's had lasting effects.
When I first began eliminating foods from my diet, my parents didn't know what to make of it. They thought I was crazy, and reacted with fear and hostility. They took me to psychiatrists who tried to discourage me from going vegan; I was banned from eating at the dinner table with my parents (I could only eat after my father was in bed); and other family members refused to speak/associate with me, afraid that my vegan "insanity" was contagious and they might catch it.
Perhaps worst of all, my parents, especially my mother, began controlling all aspects of my life. My mother has always been a "smother-mother," or "helicopter-mom" but after I finished high school and became a vegan, it became exponentially worse. She now controls about everything in my life, and it's absolutely suffocating. I'm not allowed to do anything or go anywhere without her permission.
But she thinks it's for my own good; that she's protecting me. She thinks, if left on my own, I'd never make it. That the world would eat me alive. Which is why I'm reaching out here: to try to connect with other vegans, hopefully find a soulmate, and escape from the unhealthy and soul-crushing authority of my parents.
And of course, I'm not perfect (that doesn't mean I stray from my veganism, which is incredibly important to me). I have flaws, and I want to be honest about them. I think it's only fair to any potential partner. I have depression (largely from the way people have treated me over the years, but it also runs in my family), as well as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which is an anxiety disorder (if you've ever watched the show "Monk," you might be familiar with it).
But that doesn't mean I'm not still a good person. I'm an introvert, sensitive, quiet, patient, and a good listener. I'm very low-key, and a home-body (yet in my current situation, I'm very lonely).
I'm trying to be a writer (short stories, novels, graphic novels, poetry), and am very much the artistic/intellectual type. I wanted to be an actor, but my parents forbade it. I also used to paint/draw, but my parents took away my art supplies, and now I just don't have the time anymore. I haven't had much luck in publishing, other than letters to the editor and a few online articles for an animal rights group.

I work for a large nonprofit dedicated to animal welfare. My job is fairly intense, and when I'm not working, I like to enjoy my time in the outdoors (hiking, cycling, watching birds, etc.) or watching films, listening to music, playing standards on my electric piano, or reading.
I love to travel, too, (at least I did before the pandemic) and have been to Europe (many times), Costa Rica, Thailand, Japan, and Hawaii. I am not at all religious, but I have a longstanding interest in Buddhism as both philosophy and practice.
One of my nephews recently wrote this to me: "Values really should drive our actions in life, and you have been far more active in implementing that philosophy than anyone else I have met."

I work in a high school teaching textiles which I enjoy but it can be challenging some of the time.
