Strive to live a simple, nonmaterialistic, meaningful, and purposeful life. I'm a Luddite at heart, reminiscing about the halcyon days when we weren't overdependent on technology. I embrace sechel, not artificial intelligence, and modesty, not social media. 不患莫己知，求为可知也。"Don't fret about not being well-known; instead, strive to be worthy of being known" (Analects, book 4, verse 14). Jewish ideals inform and guide in all aspects of life. These include honesty; respect for the sanctity of all life, which includes being veg*n; not hurting people's feelings or saying negative things about them; shunning gratuitous hatred of those who think differently; giving others the benefit of the doubt and the opportunity to do the right thing; not doing what is unethical, even if permitted; concern for the vulnerable and the disabled; having a higher purpose in life, including work; and learning for the sake of learning, including from everyone! But people with similar values come from many paths in life, the ultimate expression of which is being a mensch or, as Confucius termed it, a jūnzǐ (君子), someone who sets an example through his or her actions, which speak louder than words.
Enjoy hiking, being in nature, lizard-watching, learning, artistic creativity, and dry and waggish humor (but not sarcasm). Introverted and sometimes lost in thought, but hopefully thoughtful in more ways than one! Look for ways to help others while avoiding self-serving feelings like validation and pride. Adventurous but also risk-averse.

Since my best friend, Dougald, left this world on July 28th this year,
My sadness hasn't diminished even a single day.
But the times of sadness have gradually decreased.
Most of us have feelings.
When we're sad, we don't need to resist it,
But rather understand why we're sad.
This experience of losing a dear friend
Has made me feel immense regret for his short life!
Because he was such a kind person!
Many say that for every effect, there's a cause.
Perhaps his early passing was due to this causal relationship.
I understand very well how the law of attraction works.
When you're happy,
The vibration you emit attracts things related to happiness.
When you're sad, you attract similar things that make you sad.
When you're angry, you attract similar things that make you angry.
... and so on.
So, to have a fulfilling life, the vibration you emit is crucial!
You can be sad, but don't let it persist for too long.
Learn how to transform sadness into strength.
When you're feeling down, realize that
Most people don't know how to control their emotions.
If you could handle it with a relaxed attitude, they wouldn't affect you.
Impermanence is a normal part of life; there's no need to lament it.
The important thing is to accept impermanence and strive to do what you love.

I spend a lot of time outdoors. I kayak, hike, bike, birdwatch, and love meeting all my wild neighbors. The year before Covid I also started taking surfing lessons.
I write and advocate for causes I care about and have had some successes. The circus no longer comes to my town, there's a beautiful preserved forest that does NOT have a cell phone tower, there's a large city park where ALL smoking is banned.....
My favorite issues are environmental, animal rights, and those concerning poverty and human rights. I think in another life I must have been a peasant in a peasant uprising.
This might seem odd but for fun I collect trash. My kayak often looks more like a garbage scow as I gather plastics and other trash while kayaking on the river and at the beach. I mostly just find trash but I've found some interesting stuff too, including something the bomb squad had to blow up on the spot. I'm still waiting to find either a briefcase full of half a million dollars of drug money no one claims or a chest of pirate's treasure sticking half out of a sandbar.
I love gardening... for wildlife, for food, for beauty, organically, and with native plants.

I have traveled a road that has been filled with many fun days that I thought would never end. I have been in the hospitality industry all my life. Took hotel restaurant management and some business management courses in college. Currently, I am not working post-Covid because I am a full-time caregiver for my elderly parents who are aging in place in the family home a half-hour from my house here in Loudoun County Virginia. My wife and I were best friends, lovers, and she knew me better than I knew me. She was my soul mate. Since we lost the fight against cancer, I have taken grief therapy group meetings until Covid and then Zoom. I took up TMD Transcendental Meditation and it has been a gift from her I feel. It really helps me process my stress and grief. Keeps me grounded and helps me control the emotions of loss and angst. I had finally found my "why". Before I met my wife I was happy being single, was younger, and full of good times and cheer. I met hundreds of interesting people from all walks of life. The experiences and stories could fill up a bookshelf. I outgrew all of that when I shifted into the fine-dining part of the hospitality industry. Money was good, I was independent, started my own IRA, got my wine education, and can sell wine with the "somms" of the world. I had been mentioned for positive reviews in newspapers for great knowledgeable service. I worked in an Italian fine dining restaurant that paid for the down payment on our townhouse. Life was getting better and I was becoming more aware.
I met my wife at the restaurant she was the sister of my co-worker and just came from helping her Mom in Peru who had a stroke. She came back to the states to work as a dental assistant when she started working nights in the coat check. It was an attraction that sprang into love.
Since she passed I went into a shell I did not even think about finding anyone else. And to be honest I am fine if I do not. But as I come to a crossroads in my recovery, I feel it's important to reconnect with the outside world. To find my new journey. That's all the more meaningful as I am giving my two elderly Parkinsons riddled parents in-home care because of Covid and my Mom's fear of nursing homes. So that's a peak. I have nothing to hide and all to gain.
