Jewish ideals inform and guide in all aspects of life. Enjoy hiking, being in nature, lizard-watching, learning, artistic creativity, and dry humor (but not sarcasm). Introverted and sometimes lost in thought, but hopefully thoughtful in more ways than one! Look for ways to help others while avoiding self-serving feelings like validation and pride. Empathetic to the point that it can sometimes cause distress. Adventurous but also risk-averse.
I live in the desert, which, it has been said, teaches humility, not only because we are dwarfed by the majestic mountains and the expansive valleys but also because we are humbled by the miraculous, mind-blowing adaptations that allow life in all its forms to not merely survive but thrive in the most challenging of environments. Nature can be our teacher and help us improve our character traits.
I stopped practicing clinical medicine almost 30 years ago when it was no longer possible to do so ethically. My magnum opus has been the definitive treatise on Jewish medicine, a moral system that is devoid of self-interest and that patients need not fear to enter.

I spend a lot of time outdoors. I kayak, hike, bike, birdwatch, and love meeting all my wild neighbors. The year before Covid I also started taking surfing lessons.
I write and advocate for causes I care about and have had some successes. The circus no longer comes to my town, there's a beautiful preserved forest that does NOT have a cell phone tower, there's a large city park where ALL smoking is banned.....
My favorite issues are environmental, animal rights, and those concerning poverty and human rights. I think in another life I must have been a peasant in a peasant uprising.
This might seem odd but for fun I collect trash. My kayak often looks more like a garbage scow as I gather plastics and other trash while kayaking on the river and at the beach. I mostly just find trash but I've found some interesting stuff too, including something the bomb squad had to blow up on the spot. I'm still waiting to find either a briefcase full of half a million dollars of drug money no one claims or a chest of pirate's treasure sticking half out of a sandbar.
I love gardening... for wildlife, for food, for beauty, organically, and with native plants.

Since my best friend, Dougald, left this world on July 28th this year,
My sadness hasn't diminished even a single day.
But the times of sadness have gradually decreased.
Most of us have feelings.
When we're sad, we don't need to resist it,
But rather understand why we're sad.
This experience of losing a dear friend
Has made me feel immense regret for his short life!
Because he was such a kind person!
Many say that for every effect, there's a cause.
Perhaps his early passing was due to this causal relationship.
I understand very well how the law of attraction works.
When you're happy,
The vibration you emit attracts things related to happiness.
When you're sad, you attract similar things that make you sad.
When you're angry, you attract similar things that make you angry.
... and so on.
So, to have a fulfilling life, the vibration you emit is crucial!
You can be sad, but don't let it persist for too long.
Learn how to transform sadness into strength.
When you're feeling down, realize that
Most people don't know how to control their emotions.
If you could handle it with a relaxed attitude, they wouldn't affect you.
Impermanence is a normal part of life; there's no need to lament it.
The important thing is to accept impermanence and strive to do what you love.
It will make you want to live a more meaningful, fulfilling, and joyful life!

I guess it is a universal truth that greater joy may be found in giving than receiving, perhaps even more so for an Irish man when it comes to personal compliments! If I were to dig deep into my archive, I might find words such as kind, thoughtful, affectionate, understanding, genuine, funny, and a real pet. The latter term, I prefer to reserve for my fur pal Oscar! True to my roots, however, I could describe myself as somewhat reserved and cautious, a perfectionist to some degree, slightly anxious at times yet, rather like a swan, appearing graceful on the surface while paddling (unseen) like anything underwater! A good and perceptive friend, more familiar than I in both numerology and astrology, confirmed my number as a six and rising sign as Virgo, and summed me up nicely as ‘a practical dreamer.’ On reflection, it is fascinating just how much of these personality traits ring true!
