I spend a lot of time outdoors. I kayak, hike, bike, birdwatch, and love meeting all my wild neighbors. The year before Covid I also started taking surfing lessons.
I write and advocate for causes I care about and have had some successes. The circus no longer comes to my town, there's a beautiful preserved forest that does NOT have a cell phone tower, there's a large city park where ALL smoking is banned.....
My favorite issues are environmental, animal rights, and those concerning poverty and human rights. I think in another life I must have been a peasant in a peasant uprising.
This might seem odd but for fun I collect trash. My kayak often looks more like a garbage scow as I gather plastics and other trash while kayaking on the river and at the beach. I mostly just find trash but I've found some interesting stuff too, including something the bomb squad had to blow up on the spot. I'm still waiting to find either a briefcase full of half a million dollars of drug money no one claims or a chest of pirate's treasure sticking half out of a sandbar.
I love gardening... for wildlife, for food, for beauty, organically, and with native plants.

Strive to live a simple, nonmaterialistic, meaningful, and purposeful life. I'm a Luddite at heart, reminiscing about the halcyon days when we weren't overdependent on technology. I embrace sechel, not artificial intelligence, and modesty, not social media. 不患莫己知，求为可知也。"Don't fret about not being well-known; instead, strive to be worthy of being known" (Analects, book 4, verse 14). Jewish ideals inform and guide in all aspects of life. These include honesty; respect for the sanctity of all life, which includes being veg*n; not hurting people's feelings or saying negative things about them; shunning gratuitous hatred of those who think differently; giving others the benefit of the doubt and the opportunity to do the right thing; concern for the vulnerable and the disabled; having a higher purpose in life, including work; and learning for the sake of learning, including from everyone! But people with similar values come from many paths in life, the ultimate expression of which is being a mensch or, as Confucius termed it, a jūnzǐ (君子), someone who sets an example through his or her actions, which speak louder than words.
Enjoy hiking, being in nature, lizard-watching, learning, artistic creativity, and dry and waggish humor (but not sarcasm). Introverted and sometimes lost in thought, but hopefully thoughtful in more ways than one! Look for ways to help others while avoiding self-serving feelings like validation and pride. Adventurous but also risk-averse.
I live in the desert, which teaches humility, not only because we are dwarfed by the majestic mountains and the expansive valleys but also because we are humbled by the miraculous, mind-blowing adaptations that allow life in all its forms to not merely survive but thrive in the most challenging of environments. Nature can be our teacher and help us improve our character traits.
I stopped practicing clinical medicine 30 years ago when it was no longer possible to do so ethically. My magnum opus has been the definitive treatise on Jewish medicine, a moral, integrated philosophy and system of practice that is free of self-interest and that patients need not fear to enter.

My educational background is BS in Chemistry and a Masters in Math and Computer Science. Most of my career has been in computer science. I ran a software company for 14 years and sold it. I subsequently got bored and gave myself a job.
Now my day job is web design. My nighttime passion is dancing. I devote much of my free time in dance practice as a competitive ballroom dancer I compete currently at the championship level throughout the US. I'm a former Stanford University adjunct professor where I taught social dance for 9 years. I also authored their social dance curriculum.
I enjoy movies/tv (esp. sci-fi), theatre (esp. musicals), occasional ice skating (I was quite adept in my 20s, but pretty rusty now), and chilling at a beach or retreat center. I use to do yoga, but not so much lately.
I also enjoy traveling. My last biggie was one month in Tawain. So inspired, I'm currently learning Mandarin Chinese. I'm still pretty bad (我的中文不好).
I'm also bi-coastal. Until the pandemic hit, I'd spend a few months/year in Pompano Beach (South Florida) where I have a condo. The remainder of the year, unless traveling, I spend at my primary home in Los Altos Hills (Northern California).
