I spend a lot of time outdoors. I kayak, hike, bike, birdwatch, and love meeting all my wild neighbors. The year before Covid I also started taking surfing lessons.
I write and advocate for causes I care about and have had some successes. The circus no longer comes to my town, there's a beautiful preserved forest that does NOT have a cell phone tower, there's a large city park where ALL smoking is banned.....
My favorite issues are environmental, animal rights, and those concerning poverty and human rights. I think in another life I must have been a peasant in a peasant uprising.
This might seem odd but for fun I collect trash. My kayak often looks more like a garbage scow as I gather plastics and other trash while kayaking on the river and at the beach. I mostly just find trash but I've found some interesting stuff too, including something the bomb squad had to blow up on the spot. I'm still waiting to find either a briefcase full of half a million dollars of drug money no one claims or a chest of pirate's treasure sticking half out of a sandbar.
I love gardening... for wildlife, for food, for beauty, organically, and with native plants.
I enjoy a variety of things and am always eager to learn new ones. I'm open to suggestions.....

Updating this section years later - originally I said that I was intelligent, quirky, messy and that I don't "go with the flow". That has not changed. What may have changed is that I have greater understanding of some of the reasons.
I would hope that everybody becomes wiser as they get older and gains greater self-awareness, though I think that it's also easy to become cynical and develop anxiety or fears (or develop other adaptations) that affect your day-to-day existence simply because the longer you are alive, the more likely that you have accumulated bad memories from what you have witnessed, and what you have experienced of the negative realities of our world.
As for me, I am wiser though I still have a long way to go. I'm still curious and mercurial which is not conducive to being organized, and I do pay the price for that. I think it helps me in other ways to keep myself from depression. I have very strong emotions and yet a really logical and analytical backbone which are often at battle.
I hate writing about myself, but as I just demonstrated, I can get carried away in spite of myself, so it's a good spot to stop and mention some of the more surface things, like...
My big focus right now is spending time outdoors where I live. It's rural, there's field, there's forest, there is always something to discover, from identifying plant life (which unfortunately includes battling some pretty aggressive invasive plants) and animal life, to weird insects and various other critters. Sitting amongst the tall grass knowing that I can't even be seen from the road is magical for some reason.
I have worked in technology (IT) for many years, yet I have to admit some of the magic is not there like it used to be. There are some ideas I had for projects that I am keen on if I can figure out a way to fit that in with the other things that dominate my time, without dropping the ball on one of them ...
Animal rescue/providing care/reducing suffering/promoting well-being. This is often painful, often sad, but it's what I value the most.

I became widowed and retired at about the same time. I really did not have a plan or thought about this circumstance I find myself in. I have avoided eating animals for going on 15 years now. When I considered meeting new people, I found that I am not interested in building new friendships or bonding with people that do not share my thoughts and beliefs about plant-based eating. I am nearly 70, so why waste the effort. I have old friends who just think I'm weird, and have known me long enough to be accepting of my quirks, being vegan is just another one. When I thought about dating again, I decided they must be plant-based, vegan or vegetarian. My sweet wife was all of those at different times. Jewish ideals inform and guide in all aspects of life. These include honesty; respect for the sanctity of all life, which includes being veg*n; not hurting people's feelings or saying negative things about them; shunning gratuitous hatred of those who think differently; giving others the benefit of the doubt and the opportunity to do the right thing; not doing what is unethical, even if permitted; concern for the vulnerable and the disabled; having a higher purpose in life, including work; and learning for the sake of learning, including from everyone! But people with similar values come from many paths in life, the ultimate expression of which is being a mensch or, as Confucius termed it, a jūnzǐ (君子), someone who sets an example through his or her actions, which speak louder than words.
Enjoy hiking, being in nature, lizard-watching, learning, artistic creativity, and dry humor (but not sarcasm). Introverted and sometimes lost in thought, but hopefully thoughtful in more ways than one! Look for ways to help others while avoiding self-serving feelings like validation and pride. Empathetic. Adventurous but also risk-averse.
I live in the desert, which teaches humility, not only because we are dwarfed by the majestic mountains and the expansive valleys but also because we are humbled by the miraculous, mind-blowing adaptations that allow life in all its forms to not merely survive but thrive in the most challenging of environments. Nature can be our teacher and help us improve our character traits.
I stopped practicing clinical medicine almost 30 years ago when it was no longer possible to do so ethically. My magnum opus has been the definitive treatise on Jewish medicine, a moral, comprehensive, integrated philosophy and system of practice that is free of self-interest and that patients need not fear to enter.
