Scary picture eh? Despite this appearance, I am not Rasputin and I have been known to smile (often). Someone pointed out that a picture is important and this is the only recent one that fitted the sites criteria. I do have a beard at the moment but it will probably come off in the winter.
I get up very early to meditate each day. I drink quite a lot of wine too so I'm full of contradictions like most people. I'm generally happy and easygoing, maybe a little lazy. Updating this section years later - originally I said that I was intelligent, quirky, messy and that I don't "go with the flow". That has not changed. What may have changed is that I have greater understanding of some of the reasons.
I would hope that everybody becomes wiser as they get older and gains greater self-awareness, though I think that it's also easy to become cynical and develop anxiety or fears (or develop other adaptations) that affect your day-to-day existence simply because the longer you are alive, the more likely that you have accumulated bad memories from what you have witnessed, and what you have experienced of the negative realities of our world.
As for me, I am wiser though I still have a long way to go. I'm still curious and mercurial which is not conducive to being organized, and I do pay the price for that. I think it helps me in other ways to keep myself from depression. I have very strong emotions and yet a really logical and analytical backbone which are often at battle.
I hate writing about myself, but as I just demonstrated, I can get carried away in spite of myself, so it's a good spot to stop and mention some of the more surface things, like...
My big focus right now is spending time outdoors where I live. It's rural, there's field, there's forest, there is always something to discover, from identifying plant life (which unfortunately includes battling some pretty aggressive invasive plants) and animal life, to weird insects and various other critters. Sitting amongst the tall grass knowing that I can't even be seen from the road is magical for some reason.
I have worked in technology (IT) for many years, yet I have to admit some of the magic is not there like it used to be. There are some ideas I had for projects that I am keen on if I can figure out a way to fit that in with the other things that dominate my time, without dropping the ball on one of them ...
Animal rescue/providing care/reducing suffering/promoting well-being. This is often painful, often sad, but it's what I value the most.

Hobbies include daily exercise (with full body resistance training every other day), consuming content from NPR (especially via KQED Radio) and the PBS Newshour, and pursuing opportunities to help better myself or support the world around me :). Other than that, though, I'm very open to new experiences or activities, too.
Native English speaker and somewhat proficient in Spanish. I'm always up for learning more languages, especially if it helps me communicate with you or your loved ones better.
I was formerly pre-health (medical/dental) and then switched to project management because it has allowed me to continue working with and spending time with my family.
Twenty years from now, when those family opportunities are less prevalent, I'll probably look to go back to school (ideally to study something to help reduce animal and/or environmental exploitation, although hopefully humans are no longer doing that 20 years from now :p) or look into more lucrative professional options (and donate any earnings beyond what I would hope to remain a fairly frugal lifestyle to high-impact charities promoting animal welfare.)
Those plans are definitely flexible, however, especially if that flexibility would help me to better support the happiness of a wonderful vegan partner :)

My thought for the week:
Lovingkindness, the giving of oneself, is the highest form of giving.
Strive to live a simple, nonmaterialistic, meaningful, and purposeful life. I'm a Luddite at heart, reminiscing about the halcyon days when we weren't overdependent on technology. I embrace sechel, not artificial intelligence, and modesty, not social media. 不患莫己知，求为可知也。"Don't fret about not being well-known; instead, strive to be worthy of being known" (Analects, book 4, verse 14). Jewish ideals inform and guide in all aspects of life. These include honesty; respect for the sanctity of all life, which includes being veg*n; not hurting people's feelings or saying negative things about them; shunning gratuitous hatred of those who think differently; giving others the benefit of the doubt and the opportunity to do the right thing; concern for the vulnerable and the disabled; having a higher purpose in life, including work; and learning for the sake of learning, including from everyone! But people with similar values come from many paths in life, the ultimate expression of which is being a mensch or, as Confucius termed it, a jūnzǐ (君子), someone who sets an example through his or her actions, which speak louder than words.
Enjoy hiking, being in nature, lizard-watching, learning, artistic creativity, and dry and waggish humor (but not sarcasm). Introverted and sometimes lost in thought, but hopefully thoughtful in more ways than one! Look for ways to help others while avoiding self-serving feelings like validation and pride. Adventurous but also risk-averse.
I live in the desert, which teaches humility, not only because we are dwarfed by the majestic mountains and the expansive valleys but also because we are humbled by the miraculous, mind-blowing adaptations that allow life in all its forms to not merely survive but thrive in the most challenging of environments. Nature can be our teacher and help us improve our character traits.
I stopped practicing clinical medicine 30 years ago when it was no longer possible to do so ethically. My magnum opus has been the definitive treatise on Jewish medicine, a moral, integrated philosophy and system of practice that is free of self-interest and that patients need not fear to enter.

I like outings, but unless dancing would usually rather to stay home, always plenty to do on hundreds of acres, tho only 44 are actually mine. I do have some cooking skills & enjoy sharing my specialties with people I like. By trade I'm a handyman & I fix things that most people throw away. I'm all into arts & crafts, turning trash into treasure, & if u want it I can probably make it, if u broke an heirloom don't trash it before u talk to me ;) I don't make a lot of $$$ but I have no debts either. I'm into natural healing & have practiced some forms of spiritual healing as well. Have an adult son with whom I am quite close, but we live very separate lives & do not interfere with one another in any way. I do have a couple of pets now that were rescue animals. Lucy, she's a mouse. I rescued her from the bottom of a bucket when she was a little baby, lying on her side with her mouth open & couldn't even close it. Thought she was already dead & dumped the bucket & she wiggled little her feet & something pushed me to bring her in, put a drop of water in her mouth & set her near the fireplace, as she was nearly frozen & dehydrated. She's over 4 yrs old now, the average life of a mouse is only 2. She's content & responsive even tho I can't handle her, but she does take treats from my fingers thru the cage. (Update: Lucy died in October 2014, 2 months before she would've been 5 yrs old. she is missed). Then I have Skeeter, a little fuzzy dog, chihuahua & Cairn terrier. He's really cute & couldn't be much sweeter if he likes u. Came to me cause he didn't like his previous home with a dopehead & thief and wouldn't go home - nearly 10 years ago. I like a bit more freedom to travel than I have with pets, but if u have pets or if u don't that's OK with me, not a deal breaker by any means. Now I have 1 outdoor cat. I wear some leather but it's usually purchased 2nd-hand, so patronizing recycling & re-use, not death. I'm also a passionate dancer & have a wonderful circle of friends at the dances I attended weekly before the pandemic. Been doing karaoke some years & now passionate about singing too ;)
