Just to give you a small taste of my flavor, here are a few of my LIKES (in no particular order): NPR/PBS; Dar Williams, Natalie Maines, and Susan Werner; sleep; cycling; Woody Allen movies; Thai food; compassion; public transportation; being quick to forgive and to ask forgiveness; science fiction; Sebastiao Salgado; "This American Life" and "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me"; campaign finance reform; secondhand stores; feminism, J.S. Bach and Orlando di Lasso; and "The Daily Show."
And here are a few DISLIKES: the death penalty; using cell phones while driving; celery; cockiness; flakiness; SUVs; baseball and football; handguns; gas-powered leaf-blowers; cold jeans on cold mornings; foreign policy based on maintaining America's standard of living; bestseller ~The Secret~; and Creationism.
I have the heart of a thrill-seeker but the head of an actuary. This keeps me out of trouble (e.g., no STDs) but also leaves me frustrated a lot of the time.
A note about travel: I like to take foreign trips as much as the next person. Indeed, I was born overseas, so you might say I got the travel bug as a congenital parasite. But I’ve also become aware over the last few years of the disproportionate damage that traveling by jet does to the environment, especially in terms of global warming. Although I do still take planes, I try to take fewer trips and stay for longer periods. So I would much prefer one monthlong trip overseas to several spontaneous weekend trips to Hawaii, Mexico, or the Caribbean.
It amazes me sometimes that given all the things that can keep people apart, two people ever find their way to each other. My feelings on the subject are pretty well summed up in the following lyrics (by Neil Peart) from a Rush song:

I lived and was raised in the rural area of Muscatine, IA (from 1954-1974) along the Mississippi River where most of the food we ate was organic (before it actually became labeled organic as it is now) and drank free, unfiltered spring-fed water (before bottled water got popular) while growing up…FYI, I was one of the last of the fortunate school kids to have attended real, authentic one-room country schoolhouses with a real outhouse(!), outdoor hand-pump for well water, the school bell to ring, the American flag to raise and actually SAY the pledge of allegiance to the American flag inside and say the Lord's Prayer all together…Wonderful, cherished, youthful memories...

I'm a typical liberal arts person and an atheist. As to the atheist part, I think there's something much smarter than us in the universe, but it's been awfully quiet. I like eating at vegan restaurants, there are several within a few minutes of me. Often I'm quiet, sometimes not, it depends on the situation. I like to be witty and can get in a Monty Python mode if someone is receptive to it. I'll talk about anything but run from someone who wants to argue. I'm creative and always need some kind of project, usually it's writing or music. Most people like music, but I am a bit of a nut about blues, rock, and jazz. I've written some clever songs, IMHO. I'm flexible and will usually do anything others want to do, but I'm not big on travel, especially long trips. I've always been aware that my life is finite and I should live it fully, yet it has been simpler things like spending time with animals and nature that have met that need the most. I am a Southern Baptist refugee, Buddhist after Episcopal experience, and won't argue or disrespect anyone's (non-violent) beliefs. I was introduced to Zazen meditation by a Jesuit priest, and have practiced for years. I have long pondered philosophical questions (still do), and intend to continue my quest to be confused at a higher level (e.g. from epistemology to ontology).
I went to college for engineering, and worked with computers in many industries and several countries, and have traveled for fun and romance.
I am staff for a cat. I enjoy communing with nature.
I was married (long time), divorced, and last year lost my long-time partner to Alzheimer’s (we had met here in 2011). I learned some hard lessons (see disasters, above...).
I like to read, practice yoga and meditation, drink coffee and converse, travel, and learn. I like museums, art, architecture, history, music, and theater. My sadness hasn't diminished even a single day.

This experience of losing a dear friend
Has made me feel immense regret for his short life!
Because he was such a kind person!
Many say that for every effect, there's a cause.
Perhaps his early passing was due to this causal relationship.
I understand very well how the law of attraction works.
When you're happy,
The vibration you emit attracts things related to happiness.
When you're sad, you attract similar things that make you sad.
When you're angry, you attract similar things that make you angry.
... and so on.
So, to have a fulfilling life, the vibration you emit is crucial!
You can be sad, but don't let it persist for too long.
Learn how to transform sadness into strength.
When you're feeling down, realize that
Most people don't know how to control their emotions.
If you could handle it with a relaxed attitude, they wouldn't affect you.
Impermanence is a normal part of life; there's no need to lament it.
The important thing is to accept impermanence and strive to do what you love.
It will make you want to live a more meaningful, fulfilling, and joyful life!

I studied nutrition but my work is in the legal area. I enjoy my dog, gardening, reading and walking, being outside, always learning, open-minded. Are you vaccinated? What a platform to start a conversation here. I certainly agree that animal research for vaccines is wrong, wrong, wrong. Sometimes we have to go outside our comfort zone. I am sure if I were younger, I would stand by morals and not take a vaccine that may contain animal and has been tested on animals. I guess we all go through phases at different times in our lives and sometimes our views change. In Islam, their belief is that if you consume an animal, and it is prayed over, it will be used for wellness and holiness in the person consuming it.
