Veganism for me is a boycott, not a diet. I convert people by cooking them good food and answering questions they initiate. I don't use shame tactics but I don't coddle people either.
I'm ok making exceptions where it makes sense to have exceptions. Ex. honey, food otherwise being thrown away, animals that aren't sentient or feel pain, no kill/breeding eggs, invasive species, meds & vaccines, etc. I understand a lot of vegans wouldn't considered me vegan. That's okay as I do not claim to be vegan by their definition, nor was I ever doing it for the title. However, if I see evidence that one of my exceptions isn't harmless, then I will immediately remove it as an exception.

Being a vegan has not been easy for me, and that's a dramatic understatement. My family was not accepting or understanding when I decided to adopt a vegan diet, and it's had lasting effects.
When I first began eliminating foods from my diet, my parents didn't know what to make of it. They thought I was crazy, and reacted with fear and hostility. They took me to psychiatrists who tried to discourage me from going vegan; I was banned from eating at the dinner table with my parents (I could only eat after my father was in bed); and other family members refused to speak/associate with me, afraid that my vegan "insanity" was contagious and they might catch it.
Perhaps worst of all, my parents, especially my mother, began controlling all aspects of my life. My mother has always been a "smother-mother," or "helicopter-mom" but after I finished high school and became a vegan, it became exponentially worse. She now controls about everything in my life, and it's absolutely suffocating. I'm not allowed to do anything or go anywhere without her permission.
But she thinks it's for my own good; that she's protecting me. She thinks, if left on my own, I'd never make it. That the world would eat me alive. Which is why I'm reaching out here: to try to connect with other vegans, hopefully find a soulmate, and escape from the unhealthy and soul-crushing authority of my parents.
And of course, I'm not perfect (that doesn't mean I stray from my veganism, which is incredibly important to me). I have flaws, and I want to be honest about them. I think it's only fair to any potential partner. I have depression (largely from the way people have treated me over the years, but it also runs in my family), as well as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which is an anxiety disorder (if you've ever watched the show "Monk," you might be familiar with it).
But that doesn't mean I'm not still a good person. I'm an introvert, sensitive, quiet, patient, and a good listener. I'm very low-key, and a home-body (yet in my current situation, I'm very lonely).
I'm trying to be a writer (short stories, novels, graphic novels, poetry), and am very much the artistic/intellectual type. I wanted to be an actor, but my parents forbade it. I also used to paint/draw, but my parents took away my art supplies, and now I just don't have the time anymore. I haven't had much luck in publishing, other than letters to the editor and a few online articles for an animal rights group.
