I became widowed and retired at about the same time. I really did not have a plan or thought about this circumstance I find myself in. I have avoided eating animals for going on 15 years now. When I considered meeting new people, I found that I am not interested in building new friendships or bonding with people that do not share my thoughts and beliefs about plant-based eating. I am nearly 70, so why waste the effort. I have old friends who just think I'm weird, and have known me long enough to be accepting of my quirks, being vegan is just another one. When I thought about dating again, I decided they must be plant-based, vegan or vegetarian. My sweet wife was all of those at different times. As a child, walks in the park with my father lead me understand that animals aren't our playthings. From that, I decided that it was wrong to test on them, but somehow it didn't occur to me to also question eating them. But now I've been (mostly) vegan now for two decades. (I say "mostly" because I still will sometimes have cheese, such as when I'm at a restaurant without dairy-free alternatives.)
I'm fortunate that my career enables me to promote my values while using my sense of curiosity, my impulse for creativity, and my desire to socialize. Because of all that, I tend to be a pretty upbeat and positive person.
I like to explore and learn about new things (especially when they are a bit quirky), so I enjoy museums and architecture tours. But I also enjoy browsing book stores, thrift shops, flea markets -- and casual walks in forest preserves. (Bonus points if if a deer shows up!) For a more low-key form of downtime, I like conversations or snuggling on a couch to watch a movie or TV show. (Some favorite shows: The West Wing, The Newsroom, Downton Abbey, Great British Bake Off.)

I am musician, not at all bad in my opinion, but I do original music, and that's a tough gig. So, I'm also an overly-educated service worker, like many. I recently did a 3-year stint to get a tech degree (on top of my original creative writing BA) only to find that the job is awful and I don't want it. Honestly, though that was my ticket to the upper-middle class, I feel like I dodged a bullet. I value time, peace, love, friendship, my ****ing awesome cat, great art and music, and a non-destructive (if murky) purpose over material gain, social status and appearance, wealth, or power.
