I became widowed and retired at about the same time. I really did not have a plan or thought about this circumstance I find myself in. I have avoided eating animals for going on 15 years now. When I considered meeting new people, I found that I am not interested in building new friendships or bonding with people that do not share my thoughts and beliefs about plant-based eating. I am nearly 70, so why waste the effort. I have old friends who just think I'm weird, and have known me long enough to be accepting of my quirks, being vegan is just another one. When I thought about dating again, I decided they must be plant-based, vegan or vegetarian. My sweet wife was all of those at different times. I also wish to only date other widowed people, so it seems like I am asking for a lot. "Well, who doesn't harbour a Hallmark Christmas dream of a Winter Solstice lantern parade to end 2025 with!"

I also tend to keep up with what is going on in the world and more often than not stay away from mainstream media because I see a lot of deception in our world today. I didn't take the thing in 2020 and avoid health care centers and hospitals like the plague.
I have a passion for eating raw fruits and vegetables, being aware of what I put into my body both physically and mentally, taking care of my health, being outside in vast areas of nature, learning more about myself and understanding the world as a whole, spending time with friends, and finding community among others.

Since my best friend, Dougald, left this world on June 28th this year,
My sadness hasn't diminished even a single day.
But the times of sadness have gradually decreased.
Most of us have feelings.
When we're sad, we don't need to resist it,
But rather understand why we're sad.
This experience of losing a dear friend
Has made me feel immense regret for his short life!
Because he was such a kind person!
Many say that for every effect, there's a cause.
Perhaps his early passing was due to this causal relationship.
I understand very well how the law of attraction works.
When you're happy,
The vibration you emit attracts things related to happiness.
When you're sad, you attract similar things that make you sad.
When you're angry, you attract similar things that make you angry.
... and so on.
So, to have a fulfilling life, the vibration you emit is crucial!
You can be sad, but don't let it persist for too long.
Learn how to transform sadness into strength.
When you're feeling down, realize that
Most people don't know how to control their emotions.
If you could handle it with a relaxed attitude, they wouldn't affect you.
Impermanence is a normal part of life; there's no need to lament it.
The important thing is to accept impermanence and strive to do what you love.
It will make you want to live a more meaningful, fulfilling, and joyful life!

Updating this section years later - originally I said that I was intelligent, quirky, messy and that I don't "go with the flow". That has not changed. What may have changed is that I have greater understanding of some of the reasons.
I would hope that everybody becomes wiser as they get older and gains greater self-awareness, though I think that it's also easy to become cynical and develop anxiety or fears (or develop other adaptations) that affect your day-to-day existence simply because the longer you are alive, the more likely that you have accumulated bad memories from what you have witnessed, and what you have experienced of the negative realities of our world.
As for me, I am wiser though I still have a long way to go. I'm still curious and mercurial which is not conducive to being organized, and I do pay the price for that. I think it helps me in other ways to keep myself from depression. I have very strong emotions and yet a really logical and analytical backbone which are often at battle.
I hate writing about myself, but as I just demonstrated, I can get carried away in spite of myself, so it's a good spot to stop and mention some of the more surface things, like...
My big focus right now is spending time outdoors where I live. It's rural, there's field, there's forest, there is always something to discover, from identifying plant life (which unfortunately includes battling some pretty aggressive invasive plants) and animal life, to weird insects and various other critters. Sitting amongst the tall grass knowing that I can't even be seen from the road is magical for some reason.
I have worked in technology (IT) for many years, yet I have to admit some of the magic is not there like it used to be. There are some ideas I had for projects that I am keen on if I can figure out a way to fit that in with the other things that dominate my time, without dropping the ball on one of them ...
Animal rescue/providing care/reducing suffering/promoting well-being. This is often painful, often sad, but it's what I value the most.
