I lived and was raised in the rural area of Muscatine, IA (from 1954-1974) along the Mississippi River where most of the food we ate was organic (before it actually became labeled organic as it is now) and drank free, unfiltered spring-fed water (before bottled water got popular) while growing up…FYI, I was one of the last of the fortunate school kids to have attended real, authentic one-room country schoolhouses with a real outhouse(!), outdoor hand-pump for well water, the school bell to ring, the American flag to raise and actually SAY the pledge of allegiance to the American flag inside and say the Lord's Prayer all together…Wonderful, cherished, youthful memories...

Just to give you a small taste of my flavor, here are a few of my LIKES (in no particular order): NPR/PBS; Dar Williams, Natalie Maines, and Susan Werner; sleep; cycling; Woody Allen movies; Thai food; compassion; public transportation; being quick to forgive and to ask forgiveness; science fiction; Sebastiao Salgado; "This American Life" and "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me"; campaign finance reform; secondhand stores; feminism, J.S. Bach and Orlando di Lasso; and "The Daily Show."
And here are a few DISLIKES: the death penalty; using cell phones while driving; celery; cockiness; flakiness; SUVs; baseball and football; handguns; gas-powered leaf-blowers; cold jeans on cold mornings; foreign policy based on maintaining America's standard of living; bestseller ~The Secret~; and Creationism.
I have the heart of a thrill-seeker but the head of an actuary. This keeps me out of trouble (e.g., no STDs) but also leaves me frustrated a lot of the time.
A note about travel: I like to take foreign trips as much as the next person. Indeed, I was born overseas, so you might say I got the travel bug as a congenital parasite. But I’ve also become aware over the last few years of the disproportionate damage that traveling by jet does to the environment, especially in terms of global warming. Although I do still take planes, I try to take fewer trips and stay for longer periods. So I would much prefer one monthlong trip overseas to several spontaneous weekend trips to Hawaii, Mexico, or the Caribbean.
It amazes me sometimes that given all the things that can keep people apart, two people ever find their way to each other. My feelings on the subject are pretty well summed up in the following lyrics (by Neil Peart) from a Rush song:

I'm a typical liberal arts person and an atheist. As to the atheist part, I think there's something much smarter than us in the universe, but it's been awfully quiet. I like eating at vegan restaurants, there are several within a few minutes of me. Often I'm quiet, sometimes not, it depends on the situation. I like to be witty and can get in a Monty Python mode if someone is receptive to it. I'll talk about anything but run from someone who wants to argue. I'm creative and always need some kind of project, usually it's writing or music. Most people like music, but I am a bit of a nut about blues, rock, and jazz. I've written some clever songs, IMHO. I'm flexible and will usually do anything others want to do, but I'm not big on travel, especially long trips. I've always been aware that my life is finite and I should live it fully, yet it has been simpler things like spending time with animals and nature that have met that need the most. I began my vegan journey in the late 1980s for ethical reasons. Since then I have embraced all the other reasons. They are all good. I am an engineer and think like one, for better or worse. I try to live by the idea of leaving the planet a little better place than I found it. I enjoy nature: whether the woods, the mountains, or the beach. I am always reading something (usually history, current affairs, science, science-fiction, or metaphysics). I enjoy games and puzzles along with sports and working out. What a platform to start a conversation here. I certainly agree that animal research for vaccines is wrong, wrong, wrong. Sometimes we have to go outside our comfort zone. I am sure if I were younger, I would stand by morals and not take a vaccine that may contain animal and has been tested on animals. I guess we all go through phases at different times in our lives and sometimes our views change. In Islam, their belief is that if you consume an animal, and it is prayed over, it will be used for wellness and holiness in the person consuming it.

I think everything about how we approach romantic relationships is more or less completely upside down. Let's first investigate who we are to one another, and if we share a mutual admiration for and enjoyment of one another. No timeline, no pressure, no particular goal in mind, just an open interest in whatever emerges. Of course romance is wonderful if that is what is in store for us! But let's stay open and curious and avoid the usual scripts.
All that said, a bit about me and what is most important to me.
I've been vegan for 20+ years and was vegetarian many years prior to that. Veganism and a stance of moral equality with animals is a core pillar of my moral and ethical worldview and something I need to have in common with my most significant connections.
I'm passionate about veganic permaculture and I live on a spectacularly overgrown and almost entirely untamed five acres in rural West Virginia, where I don't have an HOA to complain about my bad behavior.
I work as a coach and counselor, and I am a huge believer in (good!) therapy. If you don't have a very good sense of how your childhood wounds are still influencing your patterns and emotional capacity as an adult, and you don't have a real passion for healing and expanding that capacity, we probably won't be able to develop much of a connection.
I would say I'm "spiritual but not religious," as annoying as that phrase is. I believe we are spiritual beings having a physical experience, and that our prime directive is to grow toward truth and love. I find a great deal of faith in the divine order to things (and the nature of that divine order) by observing the natural world.
I'm over a decade sober, and as part of my recovery I practice (or try to, however awkwardly and uncomfortably and imperfectly) radical honesty. This is on a moment-by-moment basis, self-disclosure of what is coming up and what is happening. I deeply desire to find this in others as well. Sober, vegan, radically honest....I'm a lot of fun at parties!

I grew up in Ohio and lived in Utah and California before moving to New York and recently moved back to Ohio. I have been vegan since September 2008 (vegetarian about a year and a half before switching). I have worked helping animals for the past 13+ years. I started as an adoption counselor at a humane society in Ohio, than a dog caregiver at a large sanctuary in Utah, and for over 8 years I was a caregiver for farm animals at a sanctuary. I have a degree in Criminal Justice, but after a few years realized that helping animals was the direction I wanted to go with my career and life, and I haven't had any regrets. I have one four legged child who runs my life (no two legged ones for me). When I am not taking care of the animals at work or my girl at home, I enjoy spending time outside going for walks, hikes and biking.
